When a Border Collie Isn't Enough
By Stephanie Shaw
I've shared my life with dogs since I was 13 years old, owning everything from rescue dogs to well-bred purebreds. By 2015, I had three Border Collies and loved every one of them—but I was looking for something with a little more grit, confidence, and versatility.
Then I found a three-month-old "Dutch Shepherd" puppy named Rowdy. I sent his picture to my husband with one word: "Need." His reply? "Why?"
The moment I met Rowdy, I knew. He wanted to work, learn, and be my partner. Although he wasn't a purebred and had some health challenges, he introduced me to a breed that would change my life.
That experience led me to import my first purebred Dutch Shepherd from Grof Box Kennel in Romania in 2016. One Dutch became two, and before long, ShawShack Dutch Shepherds was born. In 2020, we welcomed our first litter, and today it's incredibly rewarding to watch the next generations grow.
What I love most about Dutch Shepherds is their heart. They're intelligent, athletic, loyal, and happiest when they have a job to do. They challenge you to become a better trainer and build an incredible bond through trust and teamwork.
Today, I can't imagine life without a Dutch Shepherd—or several! They have introduced me to amazing people around the world and become so much more than dogs. They are family.
For me, the Dutch Shepherd isn't just the right breed—it's the perfect partner.
